Donald Rumsfeld
COMMENTARY:
The election is over, so more conservatives can now speak honestly about the failures in Iraq. Frederick Kagen, in the conservative, pro-war Weekly Standard, has laid out a detailed and compelling case for the removal of Donald Rumsfeld as Secretary of Defense. The number of mistakes is staggering. Since the war began, many conservatives have blamed the media for only focusing on the negative in Iraq. Their scorn for the elite media, however, has hindered their ability to objectively assess the situation on the ground. Now, more and more conservatives are waking up to reality, yet this sober analysis does not seem to be having much effect on the Bush Administration.Senator Chuck Hagel is one of the few Republicans who will speak the truth about Iraq, and this weekend he took more shots at Rumsfeld's incompetent leadership of the Defense Department and the Iraq War. Democratic e Senator Jon Corzine chimed in as well, pointing out that Rummy's crew continues to misjudge the situation on the ground.
Can we believe anything that Donald Rumsfeld says? Regarding the recent controversy regarding the lack of armored plates for Humvee military vehicles in Iraq, Rumsfeld claimed that the Army was working as fast as possible to get the armor to Iraq, and that it was "a matter of physics, not a matter of money." Bloomberg decided to check with Armor Holding Inc., the sole supplier of such plates. They contradicted Rumsfeld, pointing out that they could increase production by 22%,which would result in an additional 100 trucks per month getting armor.
Should Rumsfeld resign? George Will suggests it would be the honorable thing to do. Robert Novak argues that Rumsfeld has very little support in the Pentagon.
E.J. Dionne Jr. rips the arrogance of the Bush administration's approach to the problems in Iraq, particularly Dick Cheney's statement that people ought to get off Rumsfeld's case.
Many politicians and pundits are calling for Rumsfeld to resign. Peter Beinart makes the best case that Rumsfeld's policies have led to many of the problems we are facing in Iraq.
