Endorsements
With the presidential race
approaching election day, we're now getting endorsements from
editorial boards and various commentators. John
Kerry received a big boost when the Republican-leaning Cleveland
Plain Dealer refused to endorse either candidate. George
W. Bush had scored expected endorsements from the Columbus
and Cincinnati papers.
Overall, Kerry
leads Bush in the endorsement battle, and some papers that
endorsed Bush four years ago are either backing Kerry or
refusing to endorse either candidate. Here's another
analysis of the endorsement battle from Editor &
Publisher. (Updated

NEWSPAPER AND MAGAZINE ENDORSEMENTS:
John Kerry
Washington
Post, New York
Times, Des
Moines Register, The
New Yorker, Chicago
Sun-Times, The
Nation, The
New Republic,
Kerry is getting a significant number of editorials from
newspapers that supported Bush four years ago, like the Des
Moines Register and Chicago Sun-Times.
George W. Bush
Columbus
Dispatch, Denver
Post, Cincinnati
Enquirer, Houston
Chronicle, New
York Post, Investor's
Business Daily,
Bush has picked up some key endorsements in the battleground
states, such as the Columbus Dispatch.
Refuse to endorse:
A number of papers have refused to endorse either candidate.
Many of them are Republican-leaning papers that endorsed Bush
fours years ago - Cleveland
Plain Dealer, Detroit
News and The
Tampa Tribune.
COMMENTATORS AND MORE:
Andrew
Sullivan endorses John Kerry. Sullivan supports the war in
Iraq and he's a fiscal conservative, yet he could not support
Bush due to his incompetence and fiscally irresponsible
policies.
Christopher Hitchens
explains why he's slightly
for Bush.
Bruce Springsteen explains
his opposition
to the Bush administration in an op-ed piece in the New
York Times.
Ron Reagan makes his case
against George Bush in Esquire.
Bruce Springsteen interviewed by Jann Wenner about the importnace of
this election and his efforts to defeat Bush
(Rolling Stone)
Jesse
Ventura endorses Kerry (ABC)
Widow
of Christopher Reeve endorses Kerry (ABC)
Lee
Iococca switched sides, endorses Kerry (CNN)
Conservatives and libertarians for
Kerry:
This seems to be a trend. Former Republican Congressman
Bob Barr, known for his many confrontations with the Clinton
administration, has said he cannot vote for Bush, and instead
will vote for the Libertarian candidate.
Steve
Chapman cites the war and runaway spending.
Daniel Drezner focuses on Bush's
flawed decision-making process.
The editors of The American Conservative could not
agree on a candidate and therefore did not make an official
endorsement. Despite his opposition to the Ira War and his
criticisms of Bush's reliance on the Neoconservatives, Pat
Buchanan says he cannot vote for Kerry and therefore
endorses Bush. Scott
McDonnell instead decided to endorse Kerry.
Liberals for Bush:
A number of
prominent liberals, such as former New York mayor Ed Koch, are
supporting Bush. They generally cite terrorism as the reason.
I'm looking for liberal commentators and editorial boards who
are supporting Bush, so stay tuned.
