Bingo Busted
To bingo or not is the question. Ever since bingo came out in the electronic medium, it has always proved controversial. While free bingo games are available online and everywhere, the thrill of playing bingo in a slotted facility is unbeatable. However, whether it is legal or not is the burning question waiting to be addressed. Many support the bill to legalize the gaming facilities, because in times of economy slumps, it is a job haven and thousands of employees making a living out of the various electronic bingo facilities. If the electronic bingo facilities were shut down all these employees would find themselves on the road.
The bill: To legalize electronic bingo games in ten locations in Alabama.
Why: Once legalized, tax will be levied, which would be split among education, medical and senior services budget. Also heavily taxed gaming facilities can be regulated and controlled. The bill will also ensure work for the thousands employed in these casinos and thus protect their right to vote. As one senator said, “this is election year”, and votes are crucial.
The other side of the coin: Arguers against the bill being passed believe that this is a cover pulled over everyone’s eyes. Some believe that a simple law cannot legalize gambling, which is anyway illegal according to the state constitution.
But weeks and weeks of apprehension were shockingly put to rest as the supporters of the electronic bill were voted against. The final vote, which was 18 to 16, defeated the bill to legalize it. The bill fell short of three votes needed to start the debate. Supporters felt that the state will lose millions of dollars that could be earned taxing these gaming facilities. Supporters also believe that they have only faced temporary setback and that the bill is not killed completely. So watch this space in the future for further developments as to whether the bill resurfaces or not.
